Suicide truck bomb kills seven in northern Iraq

At least seven civilians were killed in an attack by a suicide truck bomber on an Iraqi army checkpoint near the northern city of Mosul, an Iraqi military official said on Thursday.
The attack took place late on Wednesday near Adayaa, 25 kilometres (15 miles) southwest of Mosul, Brigadier General Khaled Abdul Sattar, a spokesman for the Iraqi army, told AFP.

“Seven civilians were killed and 12 people were wounded, many of them soldiers,” he said.

The US military had earlier reported five people dead in what it said was a car bomb explosion.
Mosul is the focus of a major military operation by Iraqi and US forces against Al-Qaeda in Iraq fighters.
US commanders say that the city, 370 kilometres (230 miles) north of Baghdad, is the jihadists’ last urban stronghold in Iraq.

The 5th anniversary of the U.S. war in Iraq

The U.S. war in Iraq recently passed its five-year milestone, having now lasted longer than American involvement in World War II.
The Bush administration and its supporters are still defending the war. They know that Iraq didn’t have weapons of mass destruction, that al-Qaida was never operating there until after the U.S. invasion, and that dreams of remaking the Middle East through American military might were overly optimistic and disturbingly utopian.
Maybe they learnt their lesson at last !!!

Four thousand deaths, tens of thousands of lives ruined, billions of dollars in collateral damage, nearly a trillion dollars wasted, an economy in shambles… If Congress doesn’t see these as compelling reasons to remove this criminal administration, then they need to be removed, too.

The United States is using napalm in Falluja. So far, the military has denied the allegations, but the proof is mounting. On Nov. 28 The Daily Mirror’s political editor, Paul Gilfeather filed a report stating: “US troops are secretly using outlawed napalm gas to wipe out remaining insurgents in and around Fallujah. News that President George W. Bush has sanctioned the use of napalm, a deadly cocktail of polystyrene and jet fuel banned by the United Nations in 1980, will stun governments around the world.”

Bush speech hails Iraq ‘victory’

President Bush 19/3/08

Mr Bush’s Iraq policy has proved deeply unpopular at home

President George W Bush has delivered a speech to mark the fifth anniversary of the US-led invasion of Iraq. Speaking at the Pentagon, Mr Bush said “removing Saddam Hussein from power was the right decision”.

And he went on to say that the recent “surge” of US troops to Iraq has brought about “a major strategic victory in the broader war on terror”.

The speech comes amid criticism in the US of the war, with some critics pointing to its high cost.

‘Necessary costs’

In his speech, Mr Bush dismissed what he called the “exaggerated estimates” of the cost.

And he added: “The costs are necessary when we consider the cost of a strategic victory for our enemies in Iraq.”

The BBC’s Richard Lister in Washington said that the speech conspicuously lacked any references to Iraqi weapons of mass destruction - the removal of which had been the stated aim of the war.

President Bush appeared to be attempting to redefine the invasion as a mission to remove Saddam Hussein, our correspondent said.
